WWE intended to produce a special SmackDown for its Christmas episode, which followed a huge NFL video game, and it most definitely delivered. WWE SmackDown results, grades
Reigns got a near fall after a Superman punch and mauled Owens when that didnt result in a victory. Owens pressed Reigns off but got caught with knees on a flying senton, and Reigns taking place spear just provided a 2.5 count. Reigns then dragged Owens back inside and countered the Pop-Up Powerbomb with a Superman punch, but Owens dodged the spear as Reigns flew into the cage.
Owens hit a 2nd Stunner however could not capitalize. Reigns sat on the steps and mocked Owens after as they continued to trash talk.
This was unquestionably a pay-per-view quality match on tv. While the spot with Uso handcuffing Owens was difficult to believe due to the exacting nature of the placing for Owens to get his arm captured, it was an excellent way to finish the match. Owens has actually now looked very strong in a set of defeats at Reigns hands, particularly in this match where he tossed out of the spear. Reigns (c) def. Owens through escape to retain the title
Belair struck her press vertical suplex for a near fall on Bayley, but Flair got caught on a kip up after a fallaway slam as Belair hit her with the Glam Slam. Banks broke up an occurring Figure Four with a meteora, Asuka got the hot tag, knocked Banks off the ring apron and Bayley sidetracked Belair, who almost got rolled up. Belair got and missed out on a blind tag struck with a combination Codebreaker and Natural Selection to take the loss.
There was good action in this match, however the elimination rules were strange, as is any time WWE does a triple threat tag group match without 3 legal rivals. Belair taking the fall felt unneeded one week after losing head-to-head with Bayley. After industrial, a hobbled Bryan had to agree to begin the match.
Grade: B+.
Huge E got attacked by the lumberjacks a couple times early with Zayn hitting a tope con giro to take advantage. Zayn offered Big E a thumb to the eye behind the referees back however got caught on the leading rope just to hit Big E with an avalanche sundown flip powerbomb.
Huge E speared Zayn through the ropes to the outdoors, and the lumberjacks began brawling as Zayn fled. Apollo Crews captured him, and the faces brought him all the way back to the ring. Big E captured Zayn with a tummy to tummy suplex back in the ring, and he followed it with a splash and then the Big Ending for the clean 1-2-3 to become the new champion. Big E got buzz after the match celebrating with all the faces after winning his first singles champion in seven years.
The title change was expected on a holiday program, I wish it was even cleaner without a lumberjack specification, which gives Zayn an out for losing. Other than that, theres no question this was plenty and well-wrestled exciting. Huge E becoming the champion prior to the year ends is an excellent outcome of his singles press, and ideally its simply the start of a long term into the main occasion picture. Huge E def. Zayn (c) through pinfall to win the title
